Mahatma Gandhi's legacy, Ahmedabad's iconic Ashram Road is gearing up for a major transformation. This historic thoroughfare, which not only serves as one of the city's oldest and busiest routes but also connects Amdavadis to its rich historical past, is set to undergo a complete makeover.
The road will be redesigned as 'Gaurav Path,' a project initiated 47 years after its initial construction in 1976, a TOI report stated.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) recently announced a significant development plan for Ashram Road, with a tender worth Rs 35.75 crore floated on September 29. This transformative initiative holds great historical significance as Ashram Road links two prominent centers closely associated with Mahatma Gandhi — Kochrab Ashram in Paldi and the Sabarmati Ashram.
It was in Kochrab Ashram that Mahatma Gandhi resided between 1915 and 1917, alongside fellow inmates from South Africa's Phoenix Ashram, before moving to the Sabarmati Ashram in 1917.
Ashram Road is home to six major Gandhian institutions, including the MJ Library, which was inaugurated by Bapu himself and stocked with his donated books. Other notable institutions along this road include the Behra Moonga Shala (School for Deaf Mute Society), Navajivan press, and Gujarat Vidyapith, a university founded by Mahatma Gandhi as part of India's Non-Cooperation Movement, where he served as the lifelong chancellor.
In 1983, AMC expanded Ashram Road, elevating its status as a vital link connecting the city's eastern and western parts.
