IDF) announced on Thursday that they have killed Yahya Sinwar, who was considered the mastermind behind the October 7 attack on Israel. The confirmation came from Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz.
«The mass murderer Yahya Sinwar, responsible for the massacre and atrocities of October 7th, was eliminated today by IDF soldiers,» stated Katz.
Sinwar, along with Mohammed Deif, was believed to have planned the October 7 attack, which led to the deaths of about 1,200 Israelis, mostly civilians. This incident sparked a conflict causing over 42,000 Palestinian casualties in Gaza, as reported by local health authorities. Hamas has said the attack was in retaliation for Israel's treatment of Palestinians and aimed to bring global attention to their plight.
In May, the International Criminal Court's prosecutor sought arrest warrants for Sinwar, Deif, and Ismail Haniyeh for their alleged roles in the attack. While Israel claimed to have killed Deif in July, Hamas insists he is still alive.
Sinwar was born in 1962 in a Gaza refugee camp and was an early member of Hamas. In the late 1980s, Israel arrested him, and he admitted to killing 12 suspected informants, earning the nickname «The Butcher of Khan Younis.» He received four life sentences for various offenses, including the murders of two Israeli soldiers.
