The two had been nominated under the best supporting actress category in the 95th Academy Awards. Bassett was in the fray for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, while Curtis was nominated for Everything Everywhere All At Once.

During the ceremony, when Curtis was announced as the winner, Angela Bassett's reaction went viral, prompting both memes and criticism. Now, the Mission: Impossible — Fallout star has revealed how she felt during that period.
The 66-year-old said that not winning the Oscar left her feeling sad. In an interview with Town and Country, The Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star said that she thought considering the time and effort she had put in, the award was not a gift, but “a given”.
Notably, Bassett did not criticise Curtis’ win. She shared that it was interesting for her to see reactions that condemned her disappointed expression for an honour she thought that she did deserve.
