The company explained that the problem was caused by a speech recognition flaw in its software.
Users noted that when they said 'racist' while using the dictation feature, their iPhones initially displayed 'Trump' before automatically correcting the text. As per a New York Times report, Apple stated that its speech recognition system may temporarily display phonetically similar words before finalising the correct one.
This is not the first time voice recognition software has led to controversy. Before the 2024 US elections, Amazon’s Alexa faced criticism for responding differently when asked about Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. Alexa reportedly refused to provide reasons to vote for Trump while listing reasons for Harris. Amazon later admitted it was an error and fixed the responses.
The latest Apple bug emerged shortly after the company announced a $500 billion investment plan in the US over the next four years. This plan includes hiring 20,000 employees and manufacturing AI servers at a new facility in Houston.
