Ratnam made his Hindi directorial debut with Shah Rukh Khan and Manisha Koirala-starrer 'Dil Se..' in 1998. Since its release, the movie has earned a cult fan following despite its average box-office performance. The movie's epic musical composition by AR Rahman and the chemistry between SRK and Koirala is etched in the memory.
On Monday, the movie clocked in a prestigious milestone of 25 years. More than two-and-a-half decades since its release, the director recently revealed that he has not watched the people's cult favourite film for a while. Talking to Scroll, Ratnam admitted that he hasn't rewatched 'Dil Se..' for a significant period.
He said that he has watched the movie in fragments, usually on mute, a practice he follows with his other creations as well. «I haven’t seen the film in 25 years, so I don’t know how it has stood. I have only seen bits and pieces, and that too on mute – or any of my other films, for that matter,» he confessed to Scroll.
'Dil Se..' revolves around an ordinary man (played by SRK) who falls in love with a mysterious woman (Koirala), who is part of a sleeper cell to carry out terrorist activities within the nation. Set against the backdrop of insurgency in Assam, the movie leaves Manisha Koirala's character's origins deliberately ambiguous. When asked Ratnam the reason for keeping it a mystery, Ratnam explained that he wanted to symbolise various places gripped by turmoil.
They opted for this approach without preconceived notions of how it would be received, focusing on what felt right at that juncture. «The reason was, there were several troubled border states, and we were looking for a representative story. Otherwise, it would have become a story of a particular place.
