As Disney scales down Snow White premiere, a look at controversies associated with film
Disney will not provide entry to most media outlets for the premiere of the Snow White live-action remake.
Media access to the upcoming film premiere has been restricted to only photographers and an in-house crew, as per Variety. This comes after the movie's casting choices stirred conflicts. The political views of the lead star Rachel Zegler have also drawn criticism.
Snow White casting choices and backlash
A key problem centers on casting Latina actress Rachel Zegler as Snow White. Many feel that the casting deviates from the Brothers Grimm fairytale, which described Snow White's appearance as «white as snow». Zegler defended her role as Snow White by highlighting the widespread love for the story among Spanish speakers and how she felt proud to represent her heritage, Forbes reported.
The casting of the Seven Dwarfs was also an issue. Games of Thrones fame actor Peter Dinklage raised questions about the movie potentially stereotyping dwarfs in the new remake during an interview.
The studio stated that it was taking steps to work with members of the dwarfism community to develop an inclusive image. Footage from 2023 showed that there was only one actor among the seven-character ensemble who had dwarfism, which sparked public discussions.
Live Events
Right-wing critic Megyn Kelly and some members of the dwarfism community slammed Disney for the video. Many highlighted how Snow White had missed casting actors with dwarfism in the depiction of the Seven Dwarfs.
