The youngest daughter of Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and slain premier Benazir Bhutto, Aseefa Bhutto has dived into Pakistan’s turbulent politics. She has filed her candidacy for the by-poll at a National Assembly seat in Sindh province left by her father.
For some time, Aseefa (31) has been active in politics. However, she was kept away from parliamentary politics by her father Zardari.
Following Zardari’s inauguration as the 14th President of Pakistan, Aseefa is poised to become the First Lady. Interestingly, traditionally, the position was held by the spouse of the President.
On Sunday, Aseefa submitted nomination papers in the by-election for the NA-207 constituency of Shaheed Benzirabad district in the Sindh province. Her father and president, Asif Ali Zardari, won from here but vacated the seat after becoming President.
Aseefa’s resemblance to her mother Benazir Bhutto
Aseefa has a resemblance to her mother. Benazir Bhutto was killed in a bombing and suicide attack in 2007 in Rawalpindi. At that time, Aseefa was a teenager. She suffered more emotionally as compared to her two elder siblings, Bakhtawar and Bilawal.
Bilawal is the chairperson of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). Although her 35-year-old brother Bilawal had already taken over the party, Aseefa is believed a natural heir to her mother, who took over the party after her father Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was hanged in 1979 due to alleged involvement in a murder case.
On April 21, the by-elections will be held. Aseefa’s victory is almost certain. By becoming part of the parliament, she would boost her party.
