Assam Police has arrested Congress MLA Aftabuddin Mollah for allegedly making derogatory remarks about the priests.
Police arrested Mollah in Guwahati Tuesday night for making derogatory remarks on temples and namghars (prayer places) during a public rally at Goalpara on November 4.
Assam's Special DGP Harmeet Singh said, “A complaint was filed and accordingly police found it cognizable as per the law and he was arrested and produced before the court.”
Mollah said that in criminal activities priests and saints are involved. Several FIRs were filed against the MLA after his remarks went viral on social media,
Mollah issued an apology, and the Congress party issued a show cause notice.
He has been asked to answer for his comments, failing which action will be taken against him.
Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah said in the notice “The principle and perspective of Indian National Congress is never against saints, priests, seers, maulanas and Namgharias and Congress has been always revealing due respects to them. I am extremely unhappy and ask you to withdraw your statement and seek a public apology in front of the media immediately.”
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said, “ He might have made an apology however law will take its own course.
