Kashmir were disallowed to visit the martyrs' graveyard in downtown Srinagar on Thursday to commemorate the killing of 22 people by the forces of the then Dogra ruler of the region on this day in 1931. The authorities had also sealed the graveyard in the premises of Naqshband sahib shrine and deployed policemen to scuttle any gathering there. The political parties alleged that the administration is attempting to distort the history of J&K and not allowing locals to remember their heroes.
Former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, claimed that she was not allowed to move out of her private residence and was put under house arrest. Another former chief minister Omar Abdullah was not provided with the escort vehicles of his security to travel to his office for the commemoration program in remembrance of the killings of 1931. “I'm under house arrest for wanting to visit Martyr’s graveyard today.
This at a time when GoI has used its tall claims of normalcy in the Supreme Court to justify an act of betrayal- the illegal abrogation of Article 370,” said Mufti. She alleged that BJP’s own heroes Vir Sarvarkar, Shyama Prasad Mukheriji ,Golwalkar and Godse ‘who spread hatred and division’ can’t be forced on us. “For us those who sacrificed their lives for democracy to take root in J&K will always be admired for their act of courage.
We won’t allow you to distort our history or forget our heroes. On the occasion of Martyrs day, I salute their courage for valiantly fighting against despots to the end,” she said. On July 13, 1931, at least 22 muslims protesting against the autocratic rule were killed by the troops of the then Dogra ruler of J&K in Srinagar.
