England captain Harry Brook delivered a commanding performance, scoring his first one-day international century to guide his team to a 46-run victory over reigning world champions Australia in a rain-interrupted match in Durham on Tuesday.
The win keeps England's hopes alive in the five-match series, which now stands at 2-1 in Australia's favour with two matches remaining.
Chasing a target of 305, England were in trouble early at 11-2 after left-arm quick Mitchell Starc dismissed openers Phil Salt (0) and Ben Duckett (8) within the space of four deliveries.
However, Brook (110*), alongside Will Jacks (84), steadied the innings with a crucial 156-run partnership for the third wicket, combining composed shot selection with aggressive stroke play under pressure.
With England on 254-4 after 37.4 overs, rain halted play. At that point, they were 46 runs ahead of the required total based on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method for rain-affected games.
