Axis Bank's sales manager was taken into custody on Thursday while authorities look into the circumstances surrounding the suicide death of his junior colleague on July 12, who was allegedly subjected to severe bullying at work for several months.
In a statement left for her family, 27-year-old Shivani Tyagi described the difficult period she experienced in Axis House in Sector 128 after moving there in October 2023. The day she got her notice of termination, she ate poison.
Police said on Thursday that the dismissal was a retaliatory action because Shivani had quit on July 10 following a contentious confrontation at work with a coworker, a woman of the same level, which had turned physical. The sales manager sent her a notice of termination rather than accepting her resignation.
However, according to a representative for Axis Bank, Shivani received a show-cause warning from their employment services partner on July 10.
The sales manager and team head, Md Akram, was called to the Nandgram police station for questioning, according to the police, who then put him into jail. The FIR, filed when Shivani's brother went the police with her note, names Akram, the assistant sales manager, and the coworker who Shivani claimed was the primary perpetrator of the harassment she endured.
At the Nandgram police station, FIR was registered under BNS section 108, which deals with abetment to suicide.
