Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated a slew of projects in the city of Ayodhya, including the first phase of a brand new airport, christened the Maharishi Valmiki International Airport. Part of a major move by the Centre to increase connectivity to the home of the soon-to-be inaugurated Ram Mandir, the first phase of the airport cost an estimated Rs 1,450 crore to build.
The cost of the airport is part of a Rs 11,100 crore outlay for the development of Ayodhya and its surrounding areas. Here's what we know about the new air hub in the Uttar Pradesh city.
- The airport's terminal building spans an area of 6500 sqm
- It is equipped to serve about 10 lakh passengers annually
- The Ayodhya Airport is a green building, designed with sustainability in mind, with an insulated roofing system, LED lighting, and rainwater harvesting facilities.
- A water treatment plant, a sewage treatment plant, and a solar power plant have been included to meet GRIHA-5-star ratings.
- The Airport Authority of India constructed the Ayodhya terminal in 20 months, a record for the government body.
- Built in collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh government, the airport has a 2200-metre runway.
- The airport is suitable for the operation of A-321 type of aircraft. It also has two link taxiways and an apron suitable for parking eight A-321-type aircraft along with a Ground Support Equipment (GSE) area.
- Passenger facilities include nine check-in counters, three conveyor belts, and five X-BIS machines.
- The facade of the terminal Building depicts the temple architecture of the upcoming Shri Ram Mandir of Ayodhya. The interiors have been decorated with local art, paintings, and murals depicting the life of Ram.
