Banerjee emphasised how the Bengal government treated the 90 Bangladeshi fishermen, caught and brought to India, humanely.
The CM interacted with the 95 fishermen who returned to India at South 24 Parganas district's Sagar Island. Banerjee offered ₹2 lakh compensation to Putul Das, wife of one deceased fisherman who jumped into water from a trawler after getting caught in Bangladesh. She felicitated all the 95 fishermen and gave them financial assistance of ₹10,000 each as she reached Gangasagar ahead of the Sagar Mela to monitor the situation.
«We came to know that fishermen were beaten up when I was interacting with them. Some were limping. They were not eager to speak but they told me that they were beaten up badly. They have bruises everywhere, from their back to feet,» she said.
Asit Das, a fisherman, told ET that he was put in Bagerhat jail in Bangladesh. Sourav Singh said, «We were beaten up, and our hands and face were tied up the whole night. It was really scary.»
