Bengaluru is set to experience its coldest December night in over a decade this week, with temperatures predicted to drop to 10°C, breaking an over a decade-old record. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that this temperature could be the lowest since 2010, surpassing the city's previous coldest December night in 2011.
Typically, Bengaluru’s December nights have an average minimum temperature of around 15.7°C. However, this week’s forecast suggests a significant drop. On Sunday, the city recorded a minimum of 15.5°C, with the HAL airport area reaching 14.7°C and temperatures at Bengaluru International Airport dipping further to 14.5°C.
In the coming days, the IMD predicts mostly clear skies during the day, with fog or mist expected in some areas early in the morning. Daytime highs are expected to hover around 27°C, while nighttime lows are forecast to settle at 16°C.
The unusually cold weather is attributed to persistent rains caused by low-pressure systems along the coast, which have led to the significant temperature drop, the IMD report explained.
Bengaluru's coldest-ever temperature was recorded on January 13, 1884, when the mercury fell to 7.8°C, according to historical data from the IMD.
