Vikas Dubey were killed on the latter's orders, were sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by a special Gangster Act court on Tuesday.
The 23 convicted include Jaykant or Jay Bajpayee, a Kanpur-based businessman who was known to be Dubey's key financier. He was also said to be Dubey's link to senior officers in the state government and politicians.
The remaining seven accused were acquitted by court.
Apart from a ten-year sentence each under the UP Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act of 1986, the 23 have also got to pay a fine of Rs 50,000.
Special DG (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar said apart from murder and attempt to murder charges, the accused had also been booked under the Gangsters Act and the 23 have been sentenced to the maximum tenure of punishment under the law. Kumar said the police officers who investigated the crime would be awarded Rs 25,000 each from the DGP level along with a symbol of appreciation by the DG.
The case pertains to the ambushed killing of eight police personnel, including a deputy superintendent of police in July 2020 when they were trying to carry out an operation to nab Vikas Dubey who had more than 60 cases of murder, land grabbing, robbery and other cases lodged against him, including the murder of BJP minister Santosh Shukla.
The attack on the police personnel, one of the bloodiest in the history of the state, was followed by a manhunt for Dubey and his aides before he was caught in Ujjain and killed by police in an «encounter.»
