Trudeau government has been seriously misled by its agencies on the killing of known terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. While the Canadian Prime Minister's statement contains several qualifications such as «credible evidence», «allegations' and „potential link“, the Indian government and its agencies have absolutely no doubt about the links of Nijjar with terrorist activities in India. These are not only well-documented but have been shared repeatedly with Canadian authorities.
The evidence is foolproof. Any responsible government would have cooperated with India to jointly investigate and bring such a criminal to justice. The Canadian record in this regard is, however, far from exemplary.
The killers of 329, mostly Canadian, nationals in 1985 have been acquitted. Why is the life of one terrorist more precious than the lives of so many?
The Canadian government is also at great risk to itself and its country. It is turning a blind eye to the nexus of gangs and drug mafias that have found safe refuge on its soil.
Indian agencies have irrefutable evidence of individuals based in Canada, including the one killed, masterminding killings in India. This was so far the case with Pakistan. Canada's record of cooperating with India and acting against terrorism is a matter of concern and worry for the international community.
It seems being an advanced liberal democracy is no longer qualification enough for being a natural partner in the fight against terrorism, hate crime and separatism by violent means.
The Trudeau government is also seriously misreading the situation on the ground in India with respect to those who claim to be victimised.
