Built an extra floor, balcony or skipped property tax payment? Bengaluru civic body is keeping an 'AI' on you
Bengaluru civic body Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will use artificial intelligence to identify illegal constructions and streamline property tax collection, according to Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister DK Shivakumar. He said the move aims to ensure tax compliance and prevent unauthorized expansions by property owners. The technology will also be used to deliver property documents directly to residents.
Identifying illegal properties with AI
Shivakumar stated that AI would help in identifying illegal structures and delivering property documents directly to owners. «AI will be used to identify illegal constructions and also to deliver property documents to doorsteps,» he said at a press conference following a meeting with Congress legislators ahead of the BBMP budget for 2025-26.
He highlighted that many property owners had built extra floors without proper approvals and were not paying the appropriate taxes. «Many property owners have built excess floor areas without legal sanction and are not paying proportionate taxes. We will use AI to identify and measure such illegal constructions,» he added.
Expanding the tax base
According to Shivakumar, about 7 lakh properties in Bengaluru had not paid property tax, but 1 lakh of them have now been brought under the tax net. He assured that efforts were ongoing to include the remaining properties.
«BBMP earlier lacked the authority to attach illegal properties, but a law was passed last week to enable this. Additionally, it has been decided to declare even private roads in private layouts as public roads,» he said.
