Canada may begin capping international students as system spirals 'out of control'
Canada, Immigration Minister Marc Miller on Saturday said that the government is contemplating the implementation of a cap on the number of international students residing in the country.
Miller, however, did not specify the extent of the reduction being considered for the immigration system. Speaking on CTV, the minister emphasized the necessity for a dialogue between the federal and provincial governments. He expressed concern over the sheer volume of international students in Canada, describing the current system as «out of control.»

«The volume is disconcerting. It's really a system that has gotten out of control,» Miller remarked.
The minister highlighted the need to address the demand for housing in the first and second quarters of this year by exploring the possibility of imposing a cap on international students. When questioned about the timing of this consideration, given that the idea was previously discussed months ago, Miller explained the need to analyze numbers at the federal level before delving into specifics at the provincial level.
«We need to be doing our jobs and making sure that we have a system that actually makes sure people have a financial capability to come to Canada,» Miller said. He emphasized the importance of verifying offer letters and initiating a conversation about volumes and their impact on certain areas.
