Sheradand, the deserted village of Chhattisgarh’s Koriya district, now has five members eligible to vote in the Chhattisgarh Assembly election that is scheduled to be on November 7 and 17, 2023. For the past 15 years, the Election Commission has spent around Rs 10 lakh on setting up a polling booth for this small village of two members, and this time, the family has grown to five members.
The village lies under Bharatpur-Sonhat assembly constituency number 1, which is a forest area with the least number of people in Chhattisgarh. The ECI is determined to conduct polling this time also as the village does not have proper connectivity with other constituencies to cast a vote. The largest national park in Chhattisgarh, Guru Ghasidas National Park, is located in this area, which makes it difficult for these people to commute to other places.
People can only get around the area by tractor due to a broken transit system. According to a media story, the family members treat themselves with herbs rather than going to a hospital because the healthcare system is so miserable, as one of the family members recalled. Sheradabad gained notoriety when a voting booth was set up for only 4 people to vote in the 2019 Lok Sabha Election, including Mahipal, a fire watcher.
The first assembly constituency of Chhattisgarh, Koriya district, has three divisions, and half of the area is Sheradabad, where only five voters live. The other two divisions are Manendragar and Baikunthpur. The other constituencies that have the fewest voters are Kanto and Revla. While Kanto has 12 voters, seven male and five female voters, Revla has just 23 voters as per the voters list drafted by the ECI.
