Hyderabad police, in their recent bust of a massive Rs 712 crore investment scam, have revealed that the masterminds behind it are a group of Chinese experts dedicated to creating innovative scams to deceive unsuspecting victims. According to cyber crime sleuths investigating the case, this exclusive team's primary role is to develop attractive advertisements, text messages for SMS, Telegram, and WhatsApp, as well as design enticing webpages that present a façade of genuine investment proposals to lure victims, ToI reported.
«The investigation uncovered that this team is responsible for crafting various concepts and modus operandi, including online gaming, high-return investment offers, crypto trading deals, task-based investment plans, and extortion schemes involving drug parcels, among others,» a source from Hyderabad police familiar with the case told ToI. The webpages designed by the Chinese team open only when a victim clicks on the link shared by the accused, leading them further into the scam.
These Chinese fraudsters then explain their modus operandi to their Indian associates, who actively search for potential victims. Additionally, the Indian partners create shell companies to facilitate the siphoning of money.
When security agencies exposed the involvement of Chinese nationals in multiple frauds in 2021 and targeted Indian associates, the latter went underground temporarily. However, they eventually reestablished connections with their foreign counterparts and resumed their operations with even higher payments.
