As part of a major restructuring move to adjust to shifting media consumption habits, CNN announced that it will be cutting 6% of its workforce, meaning about 200 employees. In a world where digital-first platforms have become the news landscape, CNN CEO Mark Thompson said the layoffs are necessary to position the network for long-term success.
In a communication to the organization, Thompson commented on the difficulty involved in the cutback decision saying it was a hard but necessary step to ensure the position of CNN as a leading news provider globally, especially in view of the trend of increasing reliance on credible, balanced news within the changing audience trend.

These lay-offs come in a period where CNN is going through the worst challenge ever, in terms of its ratings. Last year, in 2024, the network scored its lowest-ever ratings, in total days and the key demo of adults 25-54. A primary driver for the layoffs has been changing audience behavior in how they take in news.
