Manipur Integrity (Cocomi) on Thursday opposed the attempt to bury the bodies of Kukis at Torbung, which Meiteis claim to be their area, on August 3. Cocomi, a valley-based civil society group, claimed that the same is a provocation for further violence in the conflict-torn state.
The group stated that slain Kukis cannot be buried at the Sericulture Firm in Torbung Bangla in Bishnupur district beyond the Churachandpur district boundary. The group stated they could be buried at cemeteries in Churachandpur or have their rites performed within the district, it maintained.
The state government must prohibit such moves, it said. It threatened that Cocomi, along with the public, would block the burial attempt.
It further warned the government will have to bear responsibility should any unwanted incident occur. The organisation condemned the central security forces for allegedly remaining idle during the atrocities carried out by the Kuki militants.
It further demanded strict enforcement of the law in the hill areas the same way it's being enforced in the valley areas.Manipur Women Convention too opposed the proposed burial site. MWC member Asem Nirmala said the notification to bury Kukis, reportedly killed during the crisis at Torbung Bangla, which they claim to be a Meitei area, was outrageous.
