Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said that the party will conduct a caste census in the state if voted to power in the next assembly elections. Addressing a public rally in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, Kharge's first poll outing in MP, he accused the central government of trying to change the constitution.
«Some people are trying to change the Constitution.
This is not possible because 140 crore people of the country are in support of the protection of the Constitution,» Kharge said while recalling Dr BR Ambedkar. Ambedkar was born in Mhow town of MP.
Kharge's visit was planned earlier but was postponed due to PM Modi's programme.
On August 12, Modi had laid the foundation stone for the construction of the Sant Ravidas temple in Sagar and addressed a large crowd, comprising mainly of people from the SC community.
Kharge accused the BJP of remembering Sant Ravidas only during elections.
«Modi ji has been in power for the last nine years while Shivraj Chouhan has been ruling the state for the last 18 years. They remember Ravidas only at the time of polls,» Kharge said.
«The Congress will set up a university in the name of Sant Ravidas in Sagar district if voted to power in Madhya Pradesh,» he said.
Kharge criticised the BJP government for not implementing the Bundelkhand package approved on the recommendation of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Sagar is also part of Bundelkhand, where the BJP had performed better than the Congress in the 2018 assembly elections.
Of the 26 seats in Bundelkhand, BJP had won 14, while the Congress won 10.
MP has 35 SC reserved constituencies and the BJP had won 20 seats in 2018 while the Congress had won 15. In Bundelkhand, out of six SC reserved seats, BJP had won five and Congress could win
