According to the department's forecasts, some parts of Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh will be enveloped in thick fog between 27th and 29th December, while some pockets of north Rajasthan and north Madhya Pradesh will see such conditions on 27 December.
Fog is classified as dense when visibility is between 50 metres and 200 metres.
The dense fog alert was also issued for isolated pockets of Odisha and Uttarakhand on 27th and 28th December. Other areas include Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh (30th & 31st December); Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura (27th-31st December).
For Jammu and Kashmir, forecast is for dry weather along with moderate to dense fog (Central Kashmir, Pulwama and Baramulla till December 31).
Cloudy skies and light rainfall were also forecasted for these areas for January 1-2.
In parts of north India, dense fog conditions have already sent train and plane schedules haywire. Affected routes include a number of international ones too.
For Delhi, an orange alert was issued for December 27 and a yellow alert for Thursday.
Dense fog has particularly affected Punjab and Haryana, the Met department said. Very dense fog was reported from Karnal, Hisar, Ambala and Sirsa in Haryana, and Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Halwara, Bathinda and Faridkot in Punjab.
“The situation of fog will continue and we have already issued a red warning for Punjab and Haryana.
We don’t expect rain for the next three days. Fog and dense fog will surround us over the next few days,” says Dr AK Singh, Head Scientist at the India Meteorological Department.
