James Hetfield, has talked about the extreme measures the band used to survive in the early 1980s. Hetfield talked about recording their iconic albums 'Master of Puppets' (1986) and 'Ride The Lightning' (1984) at Copenhagen's Sweet Silence Studios in a recent episode of the official podcast, 'The Metallica Report'. Hetfield revealed that during their time in Copenhagen, the band resorted to theft to make ends meet, as per the reports of 'Yahoo Entertainment'.

Hetfield recalled their rough living arrangements, saying they slept on the floor, lived in an attic, and stole food from other bands. Along with using bikes as a mode of transportation, the band also gathered empty beer bottles to trade in for additional beer. Hetfield stated in a lighthearted manner that they had nothing and that they were only borrowing it indefinitely rather than considering it theft.
