The surprising upsets and the biggest losers
The AIADMK had won one seat. At the time, the BJP had joined hands with the AIADMK but in September last year, the two parted ways. This election, the BJP chose to fight solo, fielding star candidates like K Annamalai and L Murugan in key constituencies like Coimbatore and Nilgiris. Tamil Nadu became a keenly watched state owing to the attention the state got from the BJP in recent times. But even with the Prime Minister himself making multiple visits to Tamil Nadu, the BJP has been unable to open its account in the state.
The only silver lining for the BJP was that its vote share has reportedly touched 10.21%, which is its highest ever in the state. The BJP fielded candidates in 23 constituencies and allied with several other regional parties like the Pattali Makkal Katchi, Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) and Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, led by TTV Dhinakaran. However, none of their alliance partners managed to make a dent. One of the most keenly watched contests was a three corner fight in Coimbatore where all three parties fielded their own candidates for the high profile battle.
