Ontario Premier Doug Ford is urging a collective “team Canada approach” from Canada's provinces following US President Donald Trump's announcement to introduce a 25% tariff on car imports, as per CTV News.

Ford expressed his backing for retaliatory tariffs and asked Canadian prime minister Mark Carney for a first ministers meeting with all the premiers early next week, before Trump’s proposed auto levy is imposed on April 2, as per the report.
The premier said, “I do not want to hurt other provinces, but I can assure you one thing, we’re going to make sure that we inflict as much pain as possible to the American people without inflicting pain on the Canadian population,” quoted CTV News.
Ford's remarks are made as Trump ups his trade war against Canada, a fight which started in February, as per the report. Ford has been vocal about his opposition to the US president's trade strategy, with actions including threatening to withhold electricity supplies to three US states and communicating his message on American media channels, reported CTV News.
Apart from seeking the advice of the premiers, Ford has also requested a meeting with the leaders of the auto industry to discuss how to handle the new tariffs, as per the report. He doubted whether the US could make such sweeping changes by April 2, especially in the case of analyzing every single component of a vehicle, reported CTV News. He said, «You can’t flick on a switch and create an auto plant overnight,” quoted CTV News.
