Earth into a danger zone. The study reveals that human actions have breached the boundaries of limit and several key indicators of planetary health.
These actions threaten to trigger dramatic changes in conditions on the Earth. The research has made it clear that the threshold of climate change, biodiversity, freshwater, land use, and the impact of synthetic chemicals and aerosols have been breached, CNN reported.
Scientists have said that human activities have breached safe levels for six of these parameters.
These actions are pushing the world outside a 'safe operating space' for humanity.
According to the report, published on Wednesday in the journal 'Science Advances', nine boundaries, aim to establish a set of defined 'limits' on changes humans are making to the planet. These range from heating pollution to clearing forests.
The report says that if these limits are crossed, the risk of destabilizing conditions on Earth will increase dramatically.
Katherine Richardson, a professor in biological oceanography at the University of Copenhagen and a co-author of the report has said that these limits are conservative so that the society can solve the problems before they reach a 'very high risk zone'.
Richardson points to the unprecedented summer and the rise in temperature this year. She said that no human has experienced the conditions that we are experiencing now.
She also says that crossing the planetary boundaries does not mean the world has reached a disastrous tipping point.
She said that there are some positive signs as well. She said that due to international cooperation to phase out ozone-depleting chemicals, it has improved much.
