The Election Commission will announce the schedule for holding assembly elections in five states today. The Commission has convened a press conference this noon where it will announce the dates on which assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Telangana and Mizoram will be held, according to Press Trust of India.
The Elecion Commission recently completed its poll preparedness review for the five states.
The Election Commission normally announces the poll schedule six to eight weeks before the term of the legislative assembly expires.
The term of legislative assemblies of Telangana, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram and Rajasthan end in December-January.
The upcoming state polls elections will be a major test for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after its defeat in the Karnataka assembly elections earlier this year.
The Lok Sabha polls are also due next year.
While the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) rules Telangana, Madhya Pradesh is ruled by the BJP. The Congress is in power in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.
The Mizo National Front is in power in the northeastern state.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently visited the poll-bound states of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
