Elon Musk backs USPS privatisation as mail service faces heavy losses
Elon Musk has called for the privatisation of the United States Postal Service (USPS). He argued that government-run entities should face market competition to drive efficiency. The proposal was made during a Morgan Stanley technology conference in San Francisco. His stand aligns with that of President Donald Trump’s on the matter.
Musk Pushes for Market-Driven Solutions
During his appearance, Musk said that logically, everything that can be reasonable should be privatised. He said that the US administration should privatise the Post Office and Amtrak. He added that something that has a chance of going bankrupt or does not have a good feedback loop for improvement should be privatised.
Musk’s comments have reignited long-standing debate on whether public services should be operated as businesses to improve efficiency and reduce financial burdens on the government.

USPS Faces Mounting Financial Losses
Although the USPS has been financially self-sustaining since 1970, it has faced massive losses in recent years, according to a Newsweek report. It reported a $9.5 billion loss in fiscal year 2024, up from $6.5 billion in 2023. Reportedly, fixed costs, like pension contributions and workers’ compensation, made up 80 per cent of the losses.
