Extreme weather conditions struck Washington, DC, where Premier League managers sought shelter during their pre-season tours. Aston Villa, Fulham, and Brentford, along with Chelsea, Newcastle, and Brighton, have been participating in the Premier League Summer Series. The clubs traveled to Washington DC for matches on Sunday.
However, a tropical storm hit the east coast on Saturday, causing havoc with high winds and heavy rains. During a garden party at the British Embassy, Unai Emery, Thomas Frank, and Marco Silva were guests, but they had to “run for shelter” as the storm hit, as per reports. Fortunately, no one was injured, but for safety reasons, Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino had to reroute to the team hotel and canceled his press conference.
Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie described the rainfall as «biblical,» and the winds reached speeds of 80mph. A video captured the impact of the storm, showing a massive tree uprooted, and branches and leaves scattered across the road. It is to note that Aston Villa will play against Brentford at the FedEx Field at 17:00 UK time, followed by Chelsea facing Fulham at 19:45 at the same stadium.
The possibility of winning the Premier League Summer Series is open to Villa, Chelsea, and Fulham as they complete their matches this weekend. While the weather has now improved and sunny conditions are expected for the remainder of Sunday, reports also emerged that a man in Virginia died on Saturday when a tree fell on his home during powerful summer storms that affected Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. These storms caused widespread power outages for over 200,000 people.
