Red Dye No. 3 is a synthetic colorant commonly used to give a bright red hue to various food items, including candies, cakes, and beverages. It has been a subject of health concerns due to its potential carcinogenic properties.

The FDA's decision to ban Red Dye No. 3 is based on evidence from studies showing its cancer-causing effects in male rats. While similar effects have not been conclusively demonstrated in humans, the FDA has chosen to err on the side of caution. Food manufacturers are required to remove the dye from their products by January 15, 2027, and drug manufacturers by January 18, 2028.
