Fishing trip takes a wild turn as 400-kg dolphin falls from the sky onto a small boat in New Zealand
Hole in the Rock, a coastal landmark off North Island’s northern coast. The fishermen, including boat owner Dean Harrison, were unhurt except for one minor injury.
A Sudden and Unpredictable Encounter
Harrison and his companions were fishing in their nearly 16-foot vessel while dolphins played in the waters ahead. Suddenly, a shadow crossed their boat, followed by a loud crash. «This one decided to jump on board and say hello,» Harrison said. «One minute everything was fine and then just like lightning striking, there's a big dolphin in our boat thrashing around and breaking everything.»
Struggle to Keep the Dolphin Safe
The 3.4-meter (11-foot) bottlenose dolphin, weighing over 400 kilograms (900 pounds), broke all fishing rods onboard and severely damaged the bow of the boat. As the fishermen clung to the sides, they realized the dolphin was still alive but unable to return to the water due to its size. «We looked at the dolphin still alive and breathing and we thought, we've got to start looking after him and figure out what to do,» Harrison said. «Because he's stuck in the boat for now, so he's coming along for the ride.»
