Praveen Kumar and his son had a narrow escape when his SUV collided with a trailer truck in Meerut on Tuesday night. The pacer told Press Trust of India that he had gone to drop his nephew when a big truck hit his vehicle from behind. «It could have been a lot worse.
By the grace of god we are okay and I am talking to you. Thank God it was a big car, else there could have been injuries. I initially thought just the bumper would be broken but the car is badly damaged,» he told Press Trust of India.
Praveen Kumar's accident brought back memories of Rishabh Pant's horrific car crash last year. Pant had met a serious car accident on Delhi-Dehradun highway on December 30 in which he suffered multiple injuries. He dozed off at the wheel and his luxury car had crashed into the road divider and caught fire, leaving him with severe injuries.
He later underwent a surgery at a Mumbai hospital. After the accident, Pant was airlifted in January from Dehradun to Mumbai at the BCCI's instructions and placed under the care of Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala. Praveen Kumar had played six Tests, 68 ODIs and 10 T20s for India.
Best known for his rare ability to swing the ball massively, he had played a big role in Indian team's Commonwealth Bank Series win against Australia in 2008. According to news reports, the Police has arrested the truck driver. Praveen Kumar lives in Multan Nagar, Meerut, and runs a real estate business and restaurant.
Last week, Kumar had showed up at a promotional event in the national capital where West Indies star Chris Gayle also made an appearance. Praveen Kumar had also entered politics. He had joined the Samajwadi Party in 2016.
