Pranab Mukherjee's daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the government's decision to create a memorial for the late former president.
Sharmistha said she was touched by the gesture as it came without the family asking for it. «Baba used to say that State honours shouldn’t be asked for, it should be offered. I’m so grateful that PM Modi did this to honour babas’ memory. It doesnt affect baba where he is now- beyond applaud or criticism. But for his daughter, words are not sufficient to express my joy,» she wrote in a post on X.
Pranab Mukherjee served as the 13th President of India from 2012-2017. In a political career spanning five decades, Mukherjee was a senior leader in the Indian National Congress and occupied several ministerial portfolios in the Government of India. Prior to his election as President, Mukherjee was Finance Minister from 2009 to 2012. He was awarded India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 2019, by his successor as president, Ram Nath Kovind.
