According to NASA, the photo was taken on January 30, 2025, while the ISS was orbiting 263 miles (423 km) above the Pacific Ocean. This marked Williams' ninth spacewalk, during which she and Wilmore worked on removing external hardware from the station. They also collected material samples from the Destiny laboratory and Quest airlock vents for further analysis.
In its post, NASA provided a detailed breakdown of the image. Williams’ arms, hands, and the camera she used are reflected in her helmet’s shiny visor. The backdrop showcases a breathtaking view of the ISS structure, the darkness of space, and the vast Pacific Ocean. Additional parts of her spacesuit are visible around the helmet, with a glimpse of the cosmos beyond.
