From Trump’s defense attorney to a former Mafia prosecutor, Adani hires a battery of high profile attorneys in the US

MUMBAI: Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani and his nephew Sagar Adani have hired prominent attorneys in the US—including one of Donald Trump’s lawyers and a former Mafia prosecutor—to represent them in their defence against allegations of securities fraud levelled by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The senior Adani has appointed law firm Sullivan & Cromwell LLP with Robert Giuffra leading the team representing him, as per a court filing dated 30 January.
Giuffra is one of the most prominent white-collar crime defence attorneys in the US, having represented US President Donald Trump and German carmaker Volkswagen. Giuffra is leading Trump’s appeal against his conviction in the hush money case, in which a Manhattan jury found the US President guilty of falsifying business records to pay a former adult film actor to keep their alleged involvement private. Giuffra also represented Volkswagen in its multibillion dollar ‘diesel-gate’ scandal for cheating on emissions tests.
He was the national coordinating counsel for the German firm and negotiated a $14.7 billion settlement with US regulators. He successfully defended Goldman Sachs in a class action suit emanating from the 2008 global financial crisis. Nicolas Bourtin, also from Sullivan & Cromwell, is part of Adani’s defence team.
Bourtin was earlier an assistant US attorney for the Eastern District of New York, where the SEC is litigating Adani. During his stint as a public prosecutor, he successfully prosecuted the senior leadership of several New York City mafia families for racketeering, murder and extortion. Subscribe to enjoy similar stories.MUMBAI: India’s listed electronics manufacturers are under pressure to defend profitability as the mobile-phone assembly boom slows, prompting a shift towards higher-value industrial electronics.Investors remained jittery through the last fiscal, driven by concerns that slowing consumer sentiment could weigh on the rapid growth that electronics manufacturing services (EMS) firms have delivered so far.In an interview with Mint, Jasbir Singh Gujral, managing director of Syrma SGS Technology Ltd, India’s second-largest listed EMS firm, said, “We’re increasingly looking to capture a larger chunk of contracts from defence, aerospace and med-tech verticals, all of which represent opportunities for original design manufacturing, and also bring significantly higher margins. We’ve already started this transition, and we plan to do more of it this fiscal.”Beyond mobile phones and laptops, EMS firms are expanding into smart metres for electricity boards, aerospace and defence subsystems, railway safety instrumentation, printed circuit boards and display assemblies, and medical devices deployed in hospitals.India’s annual mobile phone shipments have remained subdued since the covid-19 pandemic, with industry estimates pointing to a single-digit decline this calendar year from 152 million smartphones shipped last year.The margin pressure driving this shift is increasingly visible.In FY26, Syrma SGS reported an operating margin of 7.1%, up 2.3 percentage points.
