September 9-10, New Delhi will host the annual summit of the Group of 20, a global forum for economic cooperation, representing 85% of the world’s output. As over 40 world leaders are expected to huddle over that weekend at Bharat Mandapam, a newly revamped convention centre in the capital's Pragati Maidan, India, as its president, may have to tread a tightrope between warring factions, building a consensus in hashing out a declaration acceptable to its members. It is a daunting task.
India has initiated the process of zeroing in on a basic draft document incorporating six priority areas— Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), green development, reforms of multilateral development banks, digital public infrastructure, gender equality and a roadmap for resilient, inclusive and accelerated growth. While drafting the document ahead of the leaders’ meet, New Delhi is deploying every possible diplomatic tactic as well as some suitable words and paragraphs, to narrow down the differences among disparate stakeholders, ET has learnt. “The leaders’ declaration in New Delhi will be succinct as compared with the one in Bali.
It will be shorter and more focused,” a senior government official handling the G20 summit tells ET, requesting anonymity. The official clarifies that the declaration will still run into several pages as the outcome of 35 groups will have to be suitably accommodated.
