GAIL, the nation’s top natural gas transporter, has tied up with LanzaTech of the US to explore setting up a pilot-scale carbon capture and conversion project, the companies said in a statement on Tuesday. «The possibilities coming out of this collaboration with LanzaTech are very promising and significant to improving our carbon footprint,” said Sandeep Kumar Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of GAIL.
“Using LanzaTech's cutting-edge technology will enhance our environmental stewardship and open up new avenues for driving sustainability across our operations.” LanzaTech’s carbon capture and utilization technology works like a brewery: proprietary bacteria consume carbon-rich pollution from industrial facilities and convert it into chemicals to create rubber, plastics, synthetic fibers, and fuels, according to the statement. These materials can then be further used to make clothing, laundry detergent, and sustainable aviation fuel.
„Waste CO2 can be used to make the things we need,” said LanzaTech CEO Jennifer Holmgren. GAIL, which controls a 70% share in the domestic gas transmission business and more than 50% in the gas trading business, aims to achieve net zero emissions from its operation by 2040.
