Barbie’ may have painted the town pink, and sang her way to box-office glory, the 81st Golden Globes have turned out to be pretty underwhelming for the Greta Gerwig directorial.
The Margot Robbie-Ryan Gosling’s comic caper lost out to Emma Stone’s ‘Poor Things’ in the race to ‘Best Comedy’ award.
Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, ‘Poor Things’ is a black comedy that traces the journey of Bella Baxter, a Victorian woman who was resurrected by a mad scientist. Her brain is replaced with one from an infant. Bella embarks on a journey to discover herself.
Despite a big loss, ‘Barbie’ didn’t return home completely empty-handed. The hauntingly beautiful soundtrack ‘What Was I Made For’ won an award for ‘Best Original Song’. The song defeated formidable competitors such as Bruce Springsteen’s ‘She Came To Me’, and two other ‘Barbie’ songs — Dua Lipa’s ‘Dance The Night’ and Ryan Gosling’s ‘I Am Just Ken’.
The movie also won an award in a new category -Cinematic & Box-Office Achievement’. The satire-comedy, which earned a staggering $1.4 million at the global box-office, beat Taylor Swift’s docu-drama ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ in the race to the award.
Directed by Greta Gerwig (the director of ‘Ladybird’ and ‘Pretty Women’, ‘Barbie’ is a satire on gender stereotypes and misogyny. It stars Margot Robbie as the stereotypical Barbie, who has an existential crisis when she wakes up one day, with cellulite, imperfect balance and bad breathe!
