At around 7:30 am, the suspect approached the victim without any interaction and used a lighter to set her clothing aflame. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the crime as “one of the most depraved crimes one person could possibly commit against another human being.” Officers patrolling nearby were drawn by the smoke and flames, quickly extinguishing the fire. However, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.
Chilling footage captured on a bystander’s phone showed the suspect seated calmly on a bench just steps away from the burning victim. Despite his proximity to the crime, officers initially had no reason to suspect him.
The suspect fled but was later apprehended on another subway train, still wearing the same grey hoodie and paint-splattered pants seen in the footage. Commissioner Tisch credited local youth for aiding in his capture, saying, “I want to thank the young people who called 911 to help. They saw something, and they said something, and they did something.”
