Gujarat Agriculture Minister Raghavji Patel maintained that since sowing is still ongoing in some parts of the state, the sowing area is expected to increase further. The rise is being attributed to favorable rains during the season and record-breaking prices received by farmers for Rabi crops last year.
According to Patel, this year is expected to be very profitable for Gujarat's farmers. He noted that Gujarat plays a significant role in India's total wheat production, with the state witnessing the highest sowing of wheat during the Rabi season every year. Maintaining this trend, wheat sowing has reached a record-breaking 13.42 lakh hectares in Gujarat this year, which is 109% compared to last year. Additionally, maize sowing has been recorded at 1.32 lakh hectares this year, reflecting an increase of 118.92% compared to last year.
This year, there has been substantial sowing of pulses, particularly gram (chana). Last year, gram was sown over approximately 6.29 lakh hectares during the same period, whereas this year, it has been sown over 8.39 lakh hectares, marking a 133.38% increase compared to last year. Similarly, cumin sowing has been recorded over 4.74 lakh hectares, and mustard, a major oilseed crop, has been sown over 2.57 lakh hectares.
