The Democratic vice presidential nominee, Charles Herbster, grew up in Nebraska and is a former Republican candidate for governor. Herbster shared the photo with a family friend and posted it on X. Herbster posted on X that Tim Walz's family back in Nebraska wants everyone to know something. Trump also posted it on his Truth Social profile. The individuals in the picture are related to Walz through his great-uncle, who is the brother of his grandfather, a representative for Herbster told Newsweek. Herbster was allegedly permitted by the family to post it online.

The image was released following the revelation that Walz's brother, Jeff Walz, a resident of Florida, would not be endorsing any political candidate after his Facebook remarks disparaging Kamala Harris's running mate were discovered.
Jeff Walz said his brother was not the type of character people want when making decisions about their future. He also stated that he thought long and hard about endorsing Trump in public, but he ultimately told NewsNation that he didn't want to get involved in politics. It wasn't their family's intention to put anything out there to influence the public, he declared.
Nevertheless, Trump seemed to believe that Jeff Walz had given him the go-ahead. Trump thanked Jeff, saying he was looking forward to seeing him soon and that it was a great honor to have his approval.
