HMPV was first discovered in 2001 and has since been recognized as a common cause of respiratory infections worldwide. Symptoms typically include cough, fever, nasal congestion, and in severe cases, bronchitis or pneumonia. The virus spreads through close contact with infected individuals, respiratory droplets, and contaminated surfaces.

As of now, the U.S. has not achieved herd immunity against HMPV. Herd immunity occurs when a significant portion of the population becomes immune to a virus, either through vaccination or previous infections, thereby reducing its spread. Given the absence of a vaccine and the possibility of reinfection, achieving herd immunity for HMPV remains challenging.
Experts suggest that a lockdown-like situation due to HMPV in the U.S. is unlikely.
