Hate crimes across major US cities dipped in 2024 election year; details here
Hate crimes reported in big cities across the United States dipped slightly in 2024, unlike previous election years, when such incidents typically are expected to rise. The Crime and Justice Research Alliance reported at least 3,268 hate crimes in 42 major cities, a 2.7 percent decrease from a record high in 2023.
Nonetheless, anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim hate crimes have grown despite a general reduction. This surge has been largely linked to the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Why Did Hate Crimes Decline?
According to a USA Today report, historically, hate crimes have risen in presidential election years. In 2016, the report stated, there was an “explosion” in hate crimes during the polls. However, some large cities saw a dip in the later part of 2024.

One theory is that the way people communicate prejudice has changed. Research analyst Brian Levin told USA Today that the public may have turned to the internet to express their frustrations or at political rallies rather than in criminal behaviour.
However, Levin, a researcher from the Crime and Justice Research Alliance, warned that the trend won’t last. He said that violence from extremists in 2025 thus far has already outpaced last year’s. He compared the situation with a ‘coiled spring’ and added that the prevalence of biased notions could trigger violent acts.
