Kishore Jayaraman, president, Rolls-Royce, India & South Asia, believes in approaching things mindfully – be it his diet, downtime on the greens or work-life balance. In conversation with ET Panache, Jayaraman talks about why he thinks of work-life balance as a balloon and how he’s trained his mind to stay calm when faced with setbacks.
“I believe I have the perfect work-life balance. For me, only one of them exists – either work exists or life exists. I think of work and life like a balloon; if you press on one side, the other side just expands. If I make life smaller, then work increases and if I work less, life increases. At the end of the day, there's a finite amount of time and bandwidth and I find that my balance is perfect.
“I think one of the hardest things is staying calm when faced with setbacks. In my position, people don't always give me good news. Even when it is good news, it's always accompanied with a challenge of some sort. In those times, I think it is imperative to think through the challenge calmly and clearly. It's easy to lose control, yell and scream, but staying calm and being objective can help you achieve the desired outcome. So I have trained my mind to be calm.
“Although I don’t meditate, I have this habit of staring into distant spaces, which I believe calms my mind because it allows my mind to focus internally rather than externally. I keep my eyes open and converge into a distant spot, which allows me to stay undistracted by my surroundings. I do this quite often, especially when I am in the midst of nature.”
