Himachal Pradesh on Sunday, causing landslides and flash floods, damaging homes, and paralyzing daily life. Schools and colleges were shut down for two days. Five people died as a result.
Officials reported that all major rivers were in flood and that the local met office had issued a new red alert for extremely heavy rains (above 204 mm) on July 9 in ten out of twelve districts, with the exception of the tribal districts of Kinnaur and Lahaul and Spiti. According to the state emergency operation centre, 14 major landslides, 13 flash floods, and over 700 road closures have been reported in the last 36 hours. There have also been numerous reports of agricultural land loss, vehicles being swept away in flash floods at Nullah in Kullu, Kinnaur, and Chamba, and shops being crashed away in Manali.
Additionally, a number of roads in Shimla districts have been shut down. In the Kotgarh area of the Shimla district, a house collapsed after a landslip caused by rain, killing three family members. According to authorities, the deceased were Anil, his wife Kiran, and son Swapnil.
A woman was killed when a makeshift house near Kullu town was destroyed by a landslip. Another incident occurred on Saturday night in Katiyan tehsil of Chamba when a person was laid to rest alive after a landslip. Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the chief minister, sent his deepest condolences and announced that the district administration had been instructed to give the affected families immediate support.
