Union Home Ministry has asked to expedite the whole border fencing construction work by conducting survey and alignment of stretches along the Indo Myanmar border in Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.
Four Northeastern states including Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur share a border with Myanmar. The Mizoram Assembly on February 28 this year adopted a unanimous resolution opposing the Centre's decision to fence the India-Myanmar border and eliminate the Free Movement Regime (FMR).
The Nagaland government and almost all organisations in the state are also against the border fencing and abolishing of the FMR.
The Nagaland Assembly also on March 1 unanimously passed a resolution urging the Centre to reconsider its decision to fence the India-Myanmar border and scrap the FMR between the two countries.
The Bangladeshi refugees from Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) fled from their villages and sought refuge in Mizoram after an offensive by the Bangladeshi Army against the insurgent group Kuki-Chin National Army (KNA).
Besides the Bangladeshi refugees, around 36,000 Myanmarese took shelter in Mizoram in different phases after the military takeover there in February 2021.
Around 10,000 people including women and children belonging to Kuki-Zomi tribes, have also taken shelter in Mizoram after the ethnic violence broke out in neighbouring Manipur in May last year. The Kuki-Zomi-Chin tribes in Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Manipur share ethnic ties, and cultural and linguistic similarities with the Mizo people.
