hostage situation at Hamburg Airport has concluded after a grueling 18-hour standoff, as confirmed by local law enforcement.
On Saturday night, a 35-year-old man forcefully breached the airport's security barrier, driving his vehicle onto the airport tarmac with his four-year-old daughter aboard, positioning the car beneath a parked plane.
Surprisingly, the individual surrendered himself «without resistance,» leading to his immediate arrest, according to the police.
In a reassuring update, authorities reported that the child appeared to be physically unharmed during the ordeal, as conveyed through their message on X (formerly Twitter).
While the issue was resolved, the incident majorly affected the flight schedules, furthermore causing disruptions for several other flights to and from the airport. As airport operation have gone back to normal, passengers will still continue to experience significant delays.
The incident began around 20:00 local time (19:00 GMT) after the suspect made his way onto the airport's apron, which is where the planes are parked.
The suspect in the mean time, discharged his weapon at least twice in the air, and hurled an incendiary device from his vehicle.
The presence of explosives remained uncertain.
Authorities later clarified that the perpetrator had come to a halt beneath a Turkish Airlines plane. Fortunately, all passengers on board that flight were promptly evacuated without harm.
The gravity of the situation necessitated accommodations for hundreds of other travelers who had been waiting for their flights at the airport, who were subsequently relocated to nearby hotels.
Sandra Levgruen, a spokesperson for the Hamburg police, revealed that the man's actions were fueled by his
