The prequel show which is based on Fire and Blood by George R.R Martin, narrates the story of House Targaryen 172 years before Daenerys Targaryen's birth and the Mad King's death in season one, which puts a focus on the civil war in Targaryen becoming known as the Dance of the Dragons.

It has been reported that the show will be released in August, 2024. It was earlier reported for summer premiere after the writer's strike's end. The development for season two began in August 2022, with filming starting on April 11, 2023. It was not affected by the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes which have left an impact on several high-end productions. The filming continued in Wales and London.
